The Visual Arts play a central role in the educational experience of all children. Through participation and performance in authentic experiences, students will gain insights into the importance of a cooperative and expressive society. By developing an appreciation for past and present art forms, our children will develop a deeper understanding of our own and other cultures. In light of this, they will become more discerning participants in the creation of their own culture.

The Visual Arts are therefore, essential to education both as independent disciplines and as an integral part of all learning in all areas of the curriculum. The Arts enable students to develop higher order thinking skills, creative problem-solving, self-discipline,and the ability to collaborate with others. Arts education heightens students’ awareness of the aesthetic experiences therefore enriching all aspects of life.

Classes at Kings Highway School were actively engaged in learning about Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Ms. Shugrue’s fourth graders collaborated with Ms. Aguilar’s first graders after watching Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Together, they wrote about their dreams for a better world. Some of their heartfelt hopes included peace, protection for animals similar to how people are cared for, and access to hospital care for everyone, regardless of financial means. Meanwhile, Ms. Gonzales’ class explored the power of words and their ability to inspire change. Students brainstormed and wrote their own original quotes or meaningful phrases that could positively impact the world.

Kindness Gumball Machine

Three KHS fifth graders recently took the lead in an inspiring initiative. They visited a former teacher's first-grade classroom to plan and lead a kindness activity. After reading aloud to the students, they introduced a "kindness gumball machine," where each day a student pulls out a gumball with a word representing the goal for spreading kindness that day. Following this, they engaged the class in creating "kindness bubble gum" wrappers with positive messages. These wrappers were then hidden around the school to spread kindness and positivity throughout the community.
